Daruma have been the repository of wishes and goals in Japanese culture for centuries. Traditionally, you begin by painting the left eye first, when a goal or intention is set, adding the other eye once it is achieved.

White represents success in exams, longevity, and a healthy birth.

In Takasaki, located in the Gunma Prefecture not far from Tokyo, Daimonya is one of the most established daruma houses. Led by nationally recognised traditional craftsperson Sumikazu Nakata, he paints the face of each daruma himself, carrying forward centuries old traditions.
